BMW i8 2015

The last time BMW built a dedicated sports car positioned above the Z4 (and before that, theZ3), it built the Z8. With power from the E39 M5’s V8 and styling heavily inspired by the classic 507 of the 1950s, the limited production Z8 was – and is, if the way they’ve held their value is any indication – highly coveted. Of course, that’s the whole idea behind a “halo car.”

However, the world has changed since production of the Z8 (and the automatic-transmission-equipped Alpina V8 Roadster that was based on it) ended about a decade ago. Retro styling and throaty naturally-aspirated engines are out; forward-looking design and smaller forced-induction engines and/or hybrid drive are in. So BMW, never one to like appearing to be behind the times, has incorporated all of those en vogue features in its new technological (if not performance and price) flagship, the 2015 i8.

Yes, we’ve been seeing the i8 making the rounds on the auto show circuit for a few years now, but that was just in concept form. Surely there was no way the production version would look as radical…was there? Well it turns out that’s pretty much exactly the case. The snout, with the brand’s iconic twin-nostril grille, is unmistakably BMW, but with some twists, like bright blue accents and a black band atop the hood that extends over the roof and onto the rear fascia. The black and blue extends onto the rocker panels, which each lie below a crypto-gullwing door. The flanks feature “floating” C-pillars, U-shaped taillights and, again, black and light blue trim. The basic shape doesn’t break much new ground, but the details are a significant departure from the norm.

2014 Jaguar XFR-S / XJR

2014 Jaguar XFR-S / XJR

Both cars feature a 5.0-liter supercharged V-8, boasting 550 hp and 502 lb-ft of torque. 0-60 mph occurs in 4.4 seconds, and both sedans handle with poise and agility. As Jaguar pushes forth with new models in its lineup, its marketshare begins to grow. Times are good for the British automaker, and its only expected to get better. This pair take aim at their German rivals, and stand as worthy competitors.

What is it? Formerly known as the Infiniti G, the Q50 is first new model under Infiniti’s revised naming scheme. This sports sedan takes styling cues from the Essence concept and is the first model in Infiniti’s new brand direction.

Shown only in sedan form, the Q50 will be powered by a choice of a 3.7-liter V6 producing 328 hp or a new hybrid system. No matter which powerplant a buyer chooses, they can get rear- or all-wheel drive with the new car.

Infiniti claims the interior features a “driver-centric cockpit,” and it will debute the new Infiniti InTouch communications system with touch screen capability.
Pricing starts at $36,700 for the sedan, $43,950 for the hybrid version.

What’s new or notable? The Q50 will feature two new technologies—direct adaptive steering and active lane control. The new steering system has advanced control of the tire angle and steering input. There will be four steering settings for customization based on
road conditions or driver preference. The lane control system uses a camera to monitor the road in order to make sure the car stays within the lane.

CR’s take: Infiniti has had a very easy to use—if somewhat dated—infotainment system in its vehicles. We are hoping that InTouch is an evolutionary system and not a revolutionary one that messes up a good thing.

Hyundai Equus

What is it? After upgrading the engine and transmission of the Equus last year, Hyundai has turned its attention to the large luxury sedan’s styling and features.
The updated Signature base model has a 9.2-inch center screen to run Hyundai’s Blue Link Apps, such as traffic, weather, sports and stock data, and a 30-gigabyte jukebox. Move up to the Ultimate trim level and you get a full 12.3-inch display. Those big center screens give a good view for the backup camera.
The Equus now also comes with adaptive cruise control (which can stop and start the car automatically in slow traffic), a cross-view traffic alert, lane departure warning, and forward-collision warning. All Equus trims now include a 7-inch screen in the instrument cluster, stitched leather and wood on the dashboard, and three-zone automatic climate control. After focusing on its Chinese customers with a limo-like back seat, Hyundai says it has concluded they needed to upgrade the driver’s space for Americans.
What’s new or notable? In place of the old living-room-sectional quality rear seat, the 2014 model gets a three-across bench. It no longer has foot rests or gives massages, but it does have individually adjustable lumbar support, heating, and cooling. Rear-seat passengers can also control the navigation screen, audio system, and rear-zone climate from controls in the pull-down center armrest. And both rear-seat passengers get individual 7-inch LCD screens for watching movies or playing games.
CR’s take: When we tested an Equus in 2011, we found it plenty plush, but less engaging to drive than other luxury cars. The new model looks better suited to the American market. It could be a good bargain for consumers looking to pampered pampering.

Buick Regal

What is it? Despite some positive reviews, the sporty Buick Regal sedan has not exactly whet the appetite of car buyers, so GM is shining the apple for 2014. New under the hood for the Turbo and GS trim levels is a 259-hp, 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. Base trim levels, meanwhile, will still get the 2.4-liter four-cylinder, but it will be complemented by a mild-hybrid system to improve fuel economy. All-wheel drive is also optional for the first time.
Inside, the instrument cluster and console have been rethought. Exterior changes include a new grille, wing-shaped LED daytime running lamps, and LED taillamps. Along with the 2014 LaCrosse, the Regal gets the voice-activated IntelliLink infotainment system.
What is new or notable? Features such as a blind-zone alert, lane-departure warning, adaptive cruise control, forward-collision alert, rear cross-traffic monitoring, and pre-collision braking give the Regal a comprehensive safety system.
CR’s take: Fuel economy figures have not yet been released. However, if the Regal Turbo can improve on the 23 mpg overall that we got from our 2012 CXL and still get the 18 percent power boost that Buick claims, it could keep the pace in a fast-moving segment where much of the competition is now posting better numbers.

Audi A3

What is it? The next iteration of Audi’s smallest car, the A3, will hit the showrooms as a four-door sedan, replacing the current A3’s hatchback-only configuration. It’s a compact luxury car one size down from Audi’s best-seller, the A4, and it’s positioned to compete against Mercedes’ newest entry in this niche, the CLA, and the Lexus IS.
What's new or notable? The A3 sedan has coupe-like styling and it’s six inches longer than the hatchback, with a wheelbase that’s about two inches longer. That could translate into some badly needed rear-seat legroom. It’s still a small car but will come loaded with luxury features and optional Quattro all-wheel drive.
Power comes from newly reworked four-cylinder engines, two gasoline-powered and the other a diesel. The base engine is a 180-hp,  turbocharged 1.8-liter direct-injection engine and the up-level is a 2.0-liter using the same technology. The 2.0-liter diesel version, called TDI in Audi/VW speak, is said to be good for 150-hp.
The driver information display and optional navigation system use high-resolution 3-D graphics, the latter on a seven-inch screen.
The A3 will also offer Audi’s latest MMI (multi media interface) infotainment system and Audi Connect, which  provides internet-based navigation, weather and gas prices, and a WiFi hotspot so backseat passengers can go online too.
A sporty S3 version will arrive some time after the A3, equipped with a 2.0-liter engine said to be good for about 300-hp. A Hybrid Sportback version, which resembles the current A3, will eventually debut as a plug-in hybrid model, using a drivetrain similar to what powers the Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid.
CR’s take: A small, all-wheel-drive luxury car with and sporty handling certainly has appeal, and the diesel version should get terrific fuel economy. Prices haven’t been announced but we estimate that they’ll start in the $30,000 range.

What is it? Acura is the latest premium brand to introduce a smaller, entry-level model with the ILX. The ILX is derived from a global platform shared with the Honda Civic, though the sheetmetal and overall tuning are strictly Acura.
The ILX will be offered with three four-cylinder engines.  A 150-hp, 2.0-liter and five-speed automatic with an EPA-estimated 24 city/32 highway mpg, 111-hp, 1.5-liter hybrid and continuously variable transmission with an EPA-estimated 35 city/38 highway mpg and 201-hp, 2.4-liter and six-speed manual with an EPA-estimated 20 city/29 highway mpg.

The ILX will offer a variety of luxury features, such as keyless entry and push-button start, Pandora Internet radio, and text message playback.
What is new or notable? With the ILX, Acura returns to a segment once occupied by the Intregra. It does so with the brand’s first hybrid and the Acura-equivalent of a Honda Si variant, or a more rightly named, a Type S.
The ILX will be built in Indiana.
