What is it? While the ELR is the long-awaited cousin of the Chevrolet Volt, these two cars don't play in the same neighborhood.
This sleekly raked, and polished personal luxury coupe makes the Volt sedan (no styling slouch itself) look like an appliance. Pictures of the ELR draped in camouflage have been circulating the Internet for awhile now, but now that it's unmasked, it remains pretty true to the Converj concept design unveiled in 2009, and its dark-tinted accents, LED exterior lighting, 20-inch wheels and luxurious interior trim make for an opulent chariot.
Like the Volt, the ELR's plug-in electric/gasoline backup engine structure allows it to run on electricity alone for up to 35 miles before relying gasoline and its 1.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine to extend the range to 300 or so miles.
What’s new or notable? Cadillac did not hold back on with the interior. Chrome, nicely-stitched leather, wood trim, and carbon fiber accents create a very warm atmosphere. There will also be a full suite of Cadillac's advanced system systems, including forward collision alert, blind-spot detection and cross-traffic alert.
CR’s take: With all the on-board luxury gear, the ELR likely weighs about 200 pounds more than the Chevrolet Volt. We wonder how this will affect the ELR’s electric-only range. The instrument panel features the CUE infotainment system, which we found to be amazingly distracting and frustrating to use in the XTS sedan.
